Love is the highest human value that unites humanity across various races, religions, and cultures. Each language, whether extant or extinct, uniquely articulates the concept of love as understood by its speakers. The Arabic language, with its distinctive "root" system, specifically conveys this value distinctively compared to Indo-European languages.
Ibn Manzur, in his linguistic lexicon, utilizes Arabic to trace the roots of words used in the Holy Quran, prophetic sayings, and literature, including poetry and stories. He examines the root "habab" and its derivatives such as "love," "affection," "seed," and "foam." Additionally, he references "bubbles," which symbolize bubbles floating on water or water droplets.
This analysis highlights that love in Arabic culture, seen as the opposite of hate, encompasses not only human emotions towards others, animals, nature, and even God but is also intimately linked with growth and fertility, mainly through the vital elements of water and plants. Human love, comparable to a plant, requires water to grow and flourish, echoing the Quranic phrase, "And We made from water every living thing." This portrayal underscores love's pervasive role in fostering life and connection in the Arab worldview.
